| Saturday Afternoon Main Seminar Programme – Part One
Encountering Muslims One of the biggest challenges facing Christians today is that of being distinctive in a multifaith world. How can we turn this perceived challenge into an opportunity to give and receive? What does it mean to be Christian and evangelistic, whilst maintaining our Baptist principle of freedom of belief? In this seminar we look at how we can engage on many levels with Muslims within the UK, learning from the global experiences facing Baptists today. Hosted by Ian Bunce, Head of Mission, BUGB and Julie Aylward, JOPPA Group Arranged by the Baptist Union of Great Britain
Love your local school Schools and colleges, at the heart of our communities, are where most of our children and young people are to be found. Discover fresh strategies for churches to spiritually engage pupils, students and staff. Innovative and ‘road tested’, these resources provide opportunities for churches to build partnerships with their local schools, Sixth Form and FE colleges. Speakers: Chris Curtis, veteran schools worker of Luton Churches Education Trust, and David Skinner, adviser to REinspired, an initiative supported by Home Mission. Arranged by the Baptist Union of Great Britain
Poverty over? Poverty is an outrage against God. It robs people of freedom and hope, and denies the biblical call for justice. Christian Aid works with and on behalf of Baptists, seeking to achieve a world where poverty is over. Is that just wishful thinking? Can we truly hope for a world free from poverty? Join us as we explore what it means to be good news to the poor today. Speaker: Loretta Minghella, Director of Christian Aid Arranged by the Baptist Union of Great Britain
Biblefresh 2011 marks the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible. Churches from all traditions will engage with the Bible in a concerted way under the theme ‘Bible Fresh’. This seminar aims to share this vision and look at how churches can make the most of the opportunity to bring the Bible alive in this year of celebration by looking at how we read the Bible, train people in use of the Bible and how we encourage the experiences of the Bible. Speaker: Canon Dr Ann Holt OBE, Director of Programme, Bible Society Arranged by the Baptist Union of Great Britain
Faith goes to the movies An opportunity to think together about why film offers such vivid opportunities to discuss issues of faith and spirituality. There will be time for discussion, some presentation of ideas, a chance to see some movie clips, and more. Bring your popcorn and come ready to vote on the ‘faith goes to the movies’ awards! Arranged by BMS World Mission
Her story The HIStory of Baptist life here and overseas is also HERstory. Throughout the years women have contributed to mission and ministry but their experiences and levels of acceptance have varied. This seminar looks at the rich contribution of women’s leadership to our common story. With Anne Phillips, Cath Mawson and friends Arranged by the Baptist Union of Great Britain and Baptist Colleges
Preparing for mission-shaped ministry How is training changing in a multi-cultural, post-Christendom age? Paul Goodliff (BU), Nigel Wright (Colleges) and Mat Wilson (BMS World Mission) explore what it means to prepare for mission-shaped ministry in full-time, part-time and spare-time capacities and what contemporary training could look like. This seminar is a 'must' for anybody who is being 'nudged by the Spirit' about where their future might lie, and for those who care about the missional shapes training needs to take. Arranged by the Baptist Colleges
The reality of mission in France How do the pressures of secularism and the advance of Islam affect mission in Western Europe? Katie and Reuben Martin are BMS mission workers who have worked for the past three years in Rouen, France. They have found mission both challenging and rewarding and were recently filmed for a BMS ‘reality TV’ style resource called L’Eglise. This seminar is interactive with videos that show the importance of welcome, worship, prayer and cross-cultural community engagement in a second-generation church plant.
